Assessment of an allergy

Important points to observe:

• General signs of an allergy:
  – Juckreiz und Rötungen, oft als Hautausschlag erkennbar
  – Häufiges Niesen, Tränenfluss, verstopfte Nase aufgrund von Schleimhautschwellungen
• Severe allergic reaction: (sudden onset of intense symptoms)
  – Atembeschwerden mit pfeifenden Atemgeräuschen
  – Übelkeit und Erbrechen
  – Starke Schwellungen an Hals, Zunge, Gesicht und Augenlidern
  – Eventuell Schwindelgefühl und Benommenheit

What measures should you take?

In case of shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and cold sweat, always call 112 immediately!

• Calm the child and give them a sense of security
• Remove the allergy trigger, whether it is animal contact, pollen, or food remnants in the mouth
• Elevate the upper body or sit the child up to ease breathing (if necessary, remove tight clothing around the upper body/neck)
• Ensure fresh air
• Cool the swelling with moist, cold compresses
• Give older, conscious children ice cubes to suck on
• In case of a known allergy, administer emergency medication according to the doctor’s instructions
