Assessment of acute abdominal pain

Important points to observe:

• Hunched posture due to severe pain (possibly with crying and restlessness)
• Pale facial color with sweat on the forehead
• Loss of appetite
• Symptoms of nausea and vomiting
• Constipation/diarrhea in gastrointestinal diseases
• WARNING: In case of acute appendicitis: Pain in the lower right abdomen, fever, and a tense abdominal wall.

What measures should you take?

• Provide a sense of security and go to a calm place.
• To relieve abdominal pain, place the child on their side with bent legs or, in a supine position, place a pillow under the knees.
• The child should not eat – no solid food; tea may be offered if necessary.
