Acute bleeding
Estimated reading time:
Assessment of acute bleeding
Important points to observe:
- Obvious bleeding on arms or legs
- Growing bloodstains under the clothing
- Different intensities of bleeding (WARNING: Spurting bleeding is usually arterial and leads to rapid and heavy blood loss!)
- Accompanying symptoms of bleeding: Dizziness, weakness, lightheadedness, anxiety, trembling, rapid breathing
What measures should you take?
Call 112 for heavily bleeding wounds
- Stay calm and think of your own safety (wear gloves!)
- To stop the bleeding:
- Raise the affected arm or leg
- Apply a pressure bandage, ideally with sterile compresses and/or cloths
- If the bleeding does not stop despite a pressure bandage and manual pressure on the wound, tie off the extremity until emergency services arrive
- Take further measures:
- Ensure fresh air, lay the child down, calm them, keep them warm by covering, and do not offer food or drinks
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
