Baby care

Estimated reading time:

Proper care is essential for your baby’s well-being and health. In the first year of life, sensitive skin requires special attention, and even daily hygiene needs to be learned. This guide explains what to pay attention to in baby care.

Skin Care
  1. Gentle Cleansing: A baby’s skin is sensitive, so mild, fragrance-free care products should be used.
  2. Bathing: Two to three times a week is sufficient. The water should be around 37 °C (98.6 °F), and a re-fattening bath oil can help protect the skin.
  3. Dry skin: A moisturizing baby cream or lotion can care for dry skin areas.
  4. Diaper area: Regularly changing the diaper and gently cleaning with lukewarm water or baby wipes helps prevent skin irritation.
Hair and scalp care
  1. Gentle hair wash: Babies only need their hair washed once or twice a week with mild baby shampoo.
  2. Cradle cap: If yellowish flakes form on the scalp, gently massaging with baby oil can help loosen the flakes.
Nail care
  1. Trimming the nails: From about four weeks, nails can be trimmed with a special baby nail scissors to prevent scratches.
  2. Toenails: These grow more slowly and need to be trimmed less often.
Ear, eye, and nose care
  1. Ears: Clean only the outer ear with a damp cloth. Cotton swabs should not be inserted into the ear canal.
  2. Eyes: If secretions accumulate in the corners of the eyes, they can be removed with a soft, damp cloth.
  3. Nose: For a blocked nose, saline solution and a nasal aspirator can help.
Dental care
  1. Brushing the first teeth: As soon as the first tooth appears, it should be brushed with a soft baby toothbrush and fluoride-containing children's toothpaste.
  2. Fluoride: The administration of fluoride should be discussed with the pediatrician.
This guide is for informational purposes only and does not replace medical advice. We accept no liability for any consequences that may arise from following the recommendations given here. If you are uncertain or have specific questions, please consult your pediatrician or a baby care professional.
