Here we go!
Estimated reading time:
The last weeks of pregnancy can feel endless, but suddenly the moment arrives: labor begins! Now it’s time to stay calm, be well prepared, and take the next step with ease. Here are my tips to make sure you’re fully ready when it’s time to say: “Here we go!”
The hospital bag should be packed by the 36th week of pregnancy at the latest. Here’s a small checklist:
- Maternity record, insurance card, and all important documents
- Comfortable clothing for mom (and dad!)
- Slippers and thick socks
- Snacks and drinks for the long wait
- Phone charger
- Baby’s first essentials: onesie, hat, romper, blanket
- Hygiene items (toothbrush, shampoo, etc.)
The big question: When to go to the hospital? A rule of thumb:
- Regular contractions every 5 minutes (for first-time mothers)
- Water broken? Then it’s better to leave earlier!
- Severe pain or uncertainty? Better to go once too often than too late.
Check the fastest route beforehand and possible alternatives in case of traffic. If you’re driving your own car: Full tank? Baby seat installed? Or do you know a taxi number in case you need to get there quickly?
Labor begins, things are getting serious. Your most important job as a companion now: stay calm. Breathe with her, be present, hold her hand – but don’t crowd her. Some women want a lot of closeness, others need more space. Listen to each other and be a good team.
