Bone fractures

Estimated reading time:

Assessment of bone fractures

Important points to observe:

  1. Clear signs of a bone fracture:
  2. Obvious misalignment of the bone, possibly protruding, possibly with bleeding
  3. Limited to no mobility of the affected body part
  4. Possible signs of a bone fracture:
  5. Intense pain and swelling
  6. Limited mobility (the child supports the affected body part with the healthy hand)
What measures should you take?

For open fractures with bleeding, call 112!

  1. Calm the child and keep the affected body part still (avoid any additional movement)
  2. Stabilize the affected body part by cushioning it with blankets or pillows
  3. For closed fractures or swelling, apply cold to the affected extremity
  4. Avoid movement of the injured body part
  5. When bleeding, take care of your own safety (wear gloves) and press the bleeding with the most sterile compresses possible
  6. For heavily bleeding fractures, apply a pressure bandage and carefully elevate the body part
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation. Source: DGUV – Handbuch zur Ersten Hilfe in Bildungs- und Betreuungseinrichtungen für Kinder, Seite 89.
