Assessment of genital injuries
Important points to observe:
- Swelling and pain?
- Is there bleeding?
- Are there any foreign objects?
- Signs of a fall?
What measures should you take?
- Provide the child with rest and a private space
- Convey a sense of security
- Find a quiet place and remove uninvolved persons to preserve privacy
- The child should avoid any physical activity and be laid down
- Cover the intimate area and keep warm to protect the affected area
- In case of bleeding: Press a (sterile) compress or cloth onto the wound. For girls, keep the legs together and press firmly. Cover the child to maintain warmth and protect privacy.
- In case of swelling or bruising: Gently cool the affected area to relieve pain and reduce swelling.
- In case of foreign objects in the vagina or anus: Leave the foreign object in place and have it removed by medical professionals.
- Important! In case of severe bleeding or intense pain, call emergency services at 112 or see a doctor immediately. This also applies if there is suspicion of external influence or intent – in such cases, also contact the police at 110.
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
