Your baby is home

Estimated reading time:

After the exciting birth, a whole new chapter begins: life at home with your baby. Suddenly, everyday life is different, full of new challenges but also wonderful moments. To make the start as relaxed as possible, here are some tips for the first period.

The first time at home – Everything is new for everyone

After birth, everything feels a bit surreal. Suddenly, the baby is here, and home takes on a whole new meaning. Many parents initially worry whether they are doing everything right – this is completely normal!

Tip: Trust your instincts. Babies need love, closeness, and patience – the rest you will learn step by step.

The first day at home – Settling in and relaxing

Don’t let yourselves get stressed, but take time to settle into the new situation together. The baby may be fussy because everything is new – this is completely normal.

Tip: Plan as little as possible for the first day. A calm start helps everyone get used to each other.

Everyday life with a baby – Sleeping, eating, diapering, cuddling

Newborns don’t have a fixed schedule yet. The days (and nights) consist of sleeping, breastfeeding or bottle feeding, diapering, and lots of closeness.

Tip: Take time for cuddling – it gives the baby a sense of security and promotes bonding.

Sleepless nights – How do you cope?

Lack of sleep is unfortunately often part of it. It may take a while before the baby has longer sleep stretches. Try taking turns as parents or taking short rest breaks during the day.

Tip: “Sleep when the baby sleeps” – even if it doesn’t always work, it can help you recharge.

Visitors and rest breaks

Of course, family and friends want to see the baby, but too many visits can be exhausting. You decide when and how many guests are good for you.

Tip: Set clear boundaries and postpone visits if you feel like it – the well-being of the baby and parents comes first!

Accepting support – It’s okay to ask for help

No one has to do everything alone. If you need support, whether with housework, cooking, or just a short break, accept it.

Tip: If possible, a midwife can be a valuable support during the first weeks.

Emotions on a rollercoaster – Completely normal

Joy, exhaustion, overwhelm – the postpartum period is an emotional rollercoaster. Especially mothers experience major mood swings due to hormonal changes.

Tip: Talk openly about your feelings and consciously take small breaks whenever possible.
