Assessment of burns
Important points to observe:
- Occurrence of pain, skin redness, blistering, and charred skin areas
- Burns are caused by fire or hot objects
- Scalds result from contact with hot liquids
What measures should you take?
- Pay attention to your own safety and move the child out of the danger zone
- Put out the child's flames, starting at the head, using a blanket, by rolling them on the ground, or with water (Never point a fire extinguisher directly at the head!)
- Remove hot clothing in case of scalds.
- In case of burns, leave clothing that is stuck to the skin in place.
- Calm the child and ensure continuous supervision.
- Cool the affected areas immediately.
- Use lukewarm water or wet, cool compresses (lint-free).
- For minor burns, continuously cool until the emergency doctor arrives.
- For large-area burns, cool for only two minutes.
- Make sure the child does not get cold and protect unburned areas of the body from heat loss.
- Remove jewelry quickly, especially rings, due to the risk of swelling.
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
