The assessment
Symptoms and background information:
- Acute shortness of breath
- Sudden cough (with retching)
- Bluish discoloration of the lips and face
- Signs of fear and anxiety
- Watery and reddened eyes
- Watch out for small parts lying around
What measures should you take?
Dial the emergency number 112 immediately
- Encourage the child to cough forcefully. Bend the child over your own lap, with the head forming the lowest point.
- If there is no improvement: Give 5 separate, sharp back blows with the flat of your hand between the shoulder blades.
- If there is still no improvement: Stand behind the child.
Place your hands on the child’s sternum from the front.
Perform 5 separate upper abdominal compressions.
- If there is still no improvement:Alternate between back blows and compressions and repeat these measures until the child’s condition improves or the paramedics arrive.
Administer back blows and compressions individually and check after each one if there is any improvement.
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
