Assessment of croup cough
Symptoms and background information:
- The nostrils flare widely and noticeably.
- The child shows signs of restlessness, anxiety, and wide-open eyes.
- A wheezing sound can be heard when breathing.
- The voice is hoarse.
- Wheezing, rough cough that sounds barking.
- There may already be a respiratory infection.
- These symptoms often occur at night and during the autumn months.
What measures should you take?
Dial the emergency number 112 immediately
- Provide the child with continuous care.
- Offer distractions through games, reading a book, or watching TV to divert the child’s attention.
- Loosen tight clothing around the neck, chest, and abdomen to make breathing easier.
- Hold the child on your lap or in your arms to comfort them.
- Have the child inhale cool air by:
Stand them by the open window.
Go into the bathroom and turn on the shower (cold, humid air).
Take them outside.
Stand them in front of the open refrigerator to inhale cooler air.
- Calm the child and provide a sense of safety.
- If necessary, administer croup medications according to the doctor’s prescription.
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
