Assessment of amputations
Important points to observe:
- Visibly severed limbs, partially or completely
- Extremely heavy bleeding and pain
- States of anxiety and panic
- Symptoms of dizziness and lightheadedness
What measures should you take?
Call 112 immediately!
- Stay calm and give the child a sense of security
- Take care of your own safety and put on gloves
- Lay the child flat, with the head slightly elevated, to minimize the risk of loss of consciousness or collapse
- Stop the bleeding:
- Elevate the affected body part
- Press a compress or cloths (ideally sterile) firmly onto the wound
- Apply a pressure bandage
- If the wound continues to bleed heavily, tie off the affected body part
- Handling of the severed body part / Care:
- Wrap the severed body part as sterile and germ-free as possible in a compress
- Place it in a waterproof bag and seal it tightly (important: no contact with water!)
- Take another, larger waterproof bag, and fill it halfway with water and ice cubes
- Place the body part in the bag into the second bag with water and ice
- Hand it over to the doctor or emergency services
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
