Nutrition

Estimated reading time:

A balanced diet is especially important in the first months of life to support your baby’s growth and healthy development. This guide explains which foods are suitable during the first year of life and what you should pay attention to.

Breastfeeding and bottle feeding

Breast milk is the best food for your baby as it contains all the essential nutrients and strengthens the immune system. If breastfeeding is not possible, specialized infant formulas provide a good alternative. During the first six months, the baby should be mainly breastfed or fed with formula.

Introduction of complementary foods

From the 5th to 7th month, complementary foods can be gradually introduced. New foods should be introduced step by step:

  1. Vegetable puree: Carrots, parsnips, or pumpkin are suitable as first complementary foods.
  2. Potato and cereal puree: These can be added later.
  3. Fruit puree: Apple, banana, or pear are well tolerated.
  4. Protein-rich foods: From the 7th month, meat, fish, or yogurt can be introduced.
Important dietary rules
  1. No cow’s milk as the main drink before the first birthday.
  2. No salt, sugar, or honey in the first year of life.
  3. Introduce new foods slowly to detect any intolerances.
  4. Enough fluids in the form of water or unsweetened tea from the complementary feeding phase.
Transition to family food

Toward the end of the first year, the baby can slowly be introduced to family meals. Soft, small pieces of food make chewing and digestion easier. A healthy and varied diet without heavily seasoned or greasy foods is important.
