Preparation
Estimated reading time:
Pregnancy is not only an exciting and challenging time for the expectant mother, but also for the expectant father. The right preparation helps to actively participate in the pregnancy and to support the partner in the best possible way.
The first step in preparation is knowledge. Read books, get informed online, or attend a childbirth preparation course together with your partner. The more you know about the different stages of pregnancy, the baby’s development, and the changes in your partner’s body, the better you can support her.
It’s not only the expectant mother, but also you who can contribute to the baby’s optimal development through a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet, enough physical activity, and avoiding alcohol and nicotine are meaningful steps.
A child comes with financial responsibility. Review your budget together, get informed about government support such as parental allowance and child benefits, and plan for upcoming purchases like a stroller or crib. You can also discuss the division of parental leave early on.
Pregnancy is an emotional roller coaster. Hormones, physical changes, and fears about the future can cause mood swings in the expectant mother. Be patient, understanding, and supportive. Show interest, listen, and be there for her.
Whether it’s choosing the place of birth, setting up the baby’s room, or packing the hospital bag – be actively involved. Official matters such as registering at the registry office or applying for maternity leave can also be taken care of together.
Even during pregnancy, it’s important to make time for each other. Shared activities, conversations, and small gestures strengthen the relationship and help you face the changes together as a couple.
Find out what role you can and want to take during the birth. Do you want to be present in the delivery room? How can you support your partner during labor? Discuss your wishes and expectations together.
