Asthma attack
Estimated reading time:
Assessment of an asthma attack
Symptoms and background information:
- The child already has a known asthma condition, which is documented by the asthma card.
- There is a possibility that certain allergy-triggering factors play a role, such as animal hair, pollen, nuts as food, physical activity like school sports, or emotional stress.
- The child suffers from shortness of breath, especially when exhaling.
- There is a wheezing sound when breathing.
- Cough with thick mucus occurs.
- Accompanying symptoms include dizziness, anxiety, and restlessness.
What measures should you take?
Dial the emergency number 112 immediately
- Remove the child from the environment that could trigger the allergy.
- Slightly raise the upper body and lift the arms a little.
- Loosen tight clothing around the neck, chest, and abdomen.
- Stand the child calmly to the side and provide a sense of safety.
- Instruct the child to inhale through the nose and exhale through slightly pursed lips, which can make exhaling easier.
- Ensure fresh air, e.g., by opening a window – except if pollen is the trigger of the attack.
If the mentioned measures do not lead to improvement, promptly consult a doctor or call 112. Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Stay calm and composed in every emergency situation.
